Vulpynes – ‘OCD’ (Single Review)

  • Vulpynes - 'OCD'

It’s not every day that I find something this tasty in my inbox, but Dublin grrrl punk duo Vulpynes are not your everyday kind of band. With their sound referencing everything from the Stooges to Pretty On The Inside era Hole, they pack a punch and plenty of attitude. And I f***ing love it. I miss early Hole when they sounded punk AF and this record fills that void for me big time. Before Skating Polly came along, Hole was my long time favourite band (equal to Nirvana.) The guitars are heavy and sexy, distorted and drop D tuned. The drums are thumping and explosive. The vocals veer between a bored Valium-addled mindlessness and an impassioned roar. “I wrote the lyrics to OCD about using your idiosyncrasies and compulsions to your advantage. It’s about learning to embrace your eccentricity! It’s also an ode to my obsession with the number three.” says Maeve Molly, lead singer of Vulpynes. Since Molly joined forces with drummer Kaz Millar a year ago, Vulpynes have been ripping up stages across the UK and their native Ireland. Influenced by “Alice in Chains, The Distillers, Misfits, Mudhoney and Patti Smith” according to Molly it’s easy to see why I love their sound so much.

Single OCD is released by Vulpynes on Amazon and all major online outlets Friday 13th January 2017.
