Skating Polly aka my favourite band have just dropped this sensational new single and video for ‘Louder In Outer Space.’ Fronted on this occasion by Peyton Bighorse (Skating Polly swap between Kelli Mayo and Peyton fronting the band on vocals on different songs), ‘Louder In Outer Space’ is certainly my favourite new Skating Polly track I have heard in a while. And with their all-killer-no-filler prolific output, I don’t say that lightly.
Maybe it’s the direct influence from Veruca Salt’s Louise Post and Nina Gordon that’s done the trick. Post and Gordon have worked closely with Skating Polly on upcoming EP, entitled New Trick, from which ‘Louder In Outer Space’ is the second single. But I think it’s more than that… Peyton’s voice is shining like never before. And Kelli’s harmonies are sensational to say the least. As Kelli told UPROXX:
“I didn’t think harmonies were that important until we worked with [Lousie Post and Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt], and I didn’t realize how much you could move a song with harmonies.”
It’s a pretty, upbeat song that puts the pop in their signature Ugly Pop sound. The backbone of the song is Kurt’s Mayo’s drumming, which thankfully is in the same vein as Kelli and Peyton’s drum sound, leaning heavy on the tom toms.
“Can you hear that harmony?/ I can hear it in my sleep/I hear it even louder in outerspace”
sings Peyton and it’s euphoric. The harmonies kick in and guitars proudly play on, a mixture of scuzz and sweetness. It’s a masterpiece.
I love the video too. Skating Polly videos tend to be pretty simple in format yet compelling viewing, accounted for by their stellar performances and Grunge chic outfits and backdrops. Directed by Eddie O’Keefe, this time they are the band playing the school dance. Peyton wears the homecoming Queen’s tiara, owning the stage, Kelli wear a vintage ruffled shirt and Kurtis is in a floral shirt and bowtie. I mention this because I am big keen on grunge fashion and always have been.
Those harmonies though…
New Trick is out April 28th on El Camino Media. Pre-order it here
And if you are lucky enough to live in the US, you can catch Skating Polly live! (They are AMAZING live btw)
